சிறுபான்மை குழு என்பதை தமிழ் மக்கள் என்று மாற்றிக்கொண்டது அமரிக்க வெளிவிவகாரச் செயலகம்.
மாற்ற வைத்தது தமிழ் டயஸ்போறா அலையன்ஸ் (TAMIL DIASPORA ALLIANCE)!
சுமந்திரன் குழுவினர், அமரிக்க ராஜாங்க திணைகளத்தின் ஜனநாயகம், மனித உரிமைகள் மற்றும் தொழிலாளர் பணியகத்தின் பதில் உதவி செயலாளர் லீசா பீற்றர்சன் தலைமையிலான பிரதிநிதிகள் குழுவுடனும், உலகளாவிய குற்றவியல் நீதிக்கான அலுவலகத்தின் பிரதிநிதிகள் குழுவுடனும் சந்திப்புக்களை நடத்தினர். இவ்வமைப்புக்கள் இலங்கையில் தமிழ் தேசிய இனப்பிரச்சனை என்பதை ஓரம்கட்டும் வகையில் சிறுபான்மை குழுவாக தமிழ் மக்களை சித்தரிக்குமாறு தமது கீச்கத்தில் (twitter) செய்தி வெளியிட்டன. அரசியல் தீர்வுக்காக பேசச் சென்றதாக சொல்லிக்கொண்ட சட்ட நிபுணர் குழுவும் அதனை ஆமோதிக்குமாறு அச் செய்தியை தமது கீச்சக பக்கத்தில் பகிர்ந்துகொண்டனர்.
சிறுபான்மை குழு என தமிழ் மக்களை சிறுமை படுத்தி அவர்களின் அரசியல் ஸ்தானத்தை குறைமதிப்பு செய்வதை தமிழ் டயஸ்போறா அலையன்ஸ் {TAMIL DIASPORA ALLIANCE} என்ற புதிய அமைப்பு ஆட்சேபித்து ராஜாங்க திணைக்களத்திற்கு செய்தியிட்டது. அதனை தொடர்ந்து கீச்சகபக்கதில் சில முக்கிய பிரமுகர்களும் ஆதரவு தெரிவிக்க தொடங்கினர். பேராசிரியர் ஓரின் யிவ்டாசல் Prof Oren Yiftachel சமூக விஞ்ஞானி, அனுராதா மிட்டேல் Anuradha Mittal ஒக்லாந்து நிறுவனத்தின் நிறைவேற்றுப் பணிப்பாளர், மேத்தா பட்கர் Medha Patkar பிரபல மனித உரிமை, சமூக செயற்பட்டாளர், கலாநிதி சுவாதி சக்கரபூர்த்தி Dr. Swati Chakraborty என பலரும் தமது ஆதரவை தெரிவிக்க தொடங்கினர்.
இந்நிலையில் இன்று அமரிக்க ராஜாங்க திணைக்களத்தின் தெற்கு மற்றும் மத்திய ஆசியாவுக்கான வெளியுறவு செயலகத்தில் துணை செயலர் டொனால்ட் லூ {Donald Lu] வுடன் சந்திப்பு நடந்தது. இச்சந்திப்பை தொடர்ந்து ‘சிறுபான்மை குழு’ என்பதற்கு பதிலாக ‘தமிழ் மக்கள்’ என்று மாற்றம் செய்து கீச்சகத்தில் செய்தி வெளியிட்டனர். அதில் நிரந்தர சமாதானம் மற்றும் அவர்களின் நாட்டின் எதிர்காலத்தை தீர்மானிப்பதில் முழுக் குரல் கொடுப்பதற்காக இலங்கை தமிழ் மக்களுடன் அமெரிக்கா இணைந்துகொள்கிறது என்று தெரிவிக்கப்ட்டிருக்கிறது.
தமிழ் டயஸ்போறா அலையன்ஸ் என்ற புதிய இளைய தலைமைத்துவ அமைப்புக்கு அரசியல் செயல்பாட்டாளர்கள் பாராட்டுகளை தெரிவித்து வருகின்றனர்.
The Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs under the U.S. State Department has changed the way they refer to the Tamils from the island of Sri Lanka! For the first time, they have referred to the Tamils as the “Tamil People” instead of referring to them as “Minority Group” or “minorities”, as they have always done in the past. This is a big step forward in the Tamil political struggle.
The Office of Global Criminal Justice under the State Department of the United States tweeted on November 17th after meeting with TNA & GTF representatives that “listening to perspectives & concerns of minority groups in Sri Lanka is essential to promoting reconciliation”. The Tamil Diaspora Alliance, a newly formed team led by the next generation of Tamils worldwide, spearheaded a Twitter campaign in response to this tweet saying, “We express strong condemnation of your continued referral to the Tamil people as a minority in discussions about representations and reconciliation. The Tamil people have lived on the island of Sri Lanka for centuries. Colonization stole our kingdom, initially by the Portuguese in 1505 AD, but we remain united in collective identity, history, ethnicity, culture, and territory. The Tamil people on the island of Sri Lanka are not a minority! We are incredibly disheartened by your categorization.”
Leading activists and academics from across the world supported this Twitter campaign including Dr. Medha Patkar, an Indian social activist famously known for her work in helping people displaced by the Narmada Valley Development Project, Ms. Anuradha Mittal, the Executive Director of the Oakland Institute and Professor Oren Yiftachel, a Isreali professor of political and legal geography at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Social activist Dr. Swati Chakraborty, Assistant Professor of Human Rights and Women Studies in Schoolguru Eduserve Pvt Ltd. also joined the campaign. Politicians from Sri Lanka also retweeted this message including the Honorable Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, Honorable Member of the Parliament Mr. Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, and TELO.

ACTING ASSISTANT SECRETARY in the BUREAU OF DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND LABOR together with representatives from the Office of Global Criminal Justice.
These groups encouraged others to refer to Tamils as “minority groups” on their Twitter pages as a deliberate act to brush aside the Tamil struggle. They also stated in their Twitter site that the group who went from Sri Lanka to seek a political solution for the Tamils also agreed to use the term as a “minority group”.
As a result of this Twitter campaign, Mr. Donald Lu, the United States diplomat serving as Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs held a meeting after which a tweet was released from his office changing the way they refer to the Tamils from “minority group” to “Tamil people”. The tweet reads, “[…] The US joins Sri Lankan Tamil people in search for lasting peace & full voice in deciding their country’s future.”
Words are chosen very carefully in the field of diplomacy and State politics. The term minority had been used to categorize the Tamil people until now in an attempt to strip them of their political rights. Now, for the first time, the term Tamil people being used, is a substantial turning point in the Tamil struggle.
For having worked tirelessly and spearheading this campaign “Tamil Diaspora Alliance” is being praised by political activists and the community.
